Man convicted of murdering Pittsburg store clerk over messy shoe

MARTINEZ Jurors took roughly minutes to convict a man of first-degree murder for killing a Pittsburg store clerk in during an argument over a dirty sneaker Gregory Rossignon was convicted of murder dissuading a witness discharge of a firearm and possession of a firearm of a felon On March Rossignon shot and killed -year-old Abdul Raouf outside the E-Z Stop where Raouf worked jurors determined Rossignon testified at trial that he fired the gun accidentally and felt terrible about it Other onlookers testified that Rossignon was enraged after an argument with his girlfriend and that he d fired shots outside her home intimidated an acquaintance for a ride to the store and communicated his girlfriend to clean off his shoe prompting Raouf to kick the woman out of the store When the woman narrated Rossignon she d been ejected from the store for cleaning the shoe Rossignon confronted Raouf outside and shot him Rossignon s lawyer initially reported jurors they wouldn t be able to tell whether it was his client on surveillance footage of the shooting but hedged this defense by saying that either way Rossignon lacked the mental state necessary for murder Raouf was shot twice in the chest in what a prosecutor called an execution After the murder Rossignon fled to Modesto and was arrested days later after a SWAT standoff Rossignon has two other arrests in homicide cases He was arrested on suspicion of murder as a teen in the early s but acquitted at trial In he was arrested in connection with the shooting death of -year-old Demariay Weathers in Antioch and ultimately pleaded no contest to manslaughter for a prison term court records show For this first-degree murder conviction Rossignon faces a minimum sentence of years to life but will likely receive decades more than that
